Perkins will run track at Kansas Jr. College

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

Forrest City girls' track coach Lewis Etheridge celebrated a first Monday, when Jessica Perkins signed a letter-of-intent to attend Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas on a track scholarship.

Perkins is the first female track athlete to sign a track scholarship since Etheridge has been coaching girls' track at Forrest City.

She is the first female track athlete to be offered a scholarship since Atrell Razor in the mid 1980s.

Perkins was a three-year letterman for the Lady Mustang track team and was named All-Conference three times.

As a senior this season, Perkins was named Forrest City's female Gatorade Athlete of the Year.

Perkins ran the 100 and 200-meter sprints for Etheridge and anchored the 400-meter relay team.

Her best time in the 100-meter run was 12.7 while her best time in the 200 was 26.6.

Garden City track coach James White signed Perkins to a scholarship, "sight unseen," according to Etheridge.

"I always felt that Jessica could go somewhere at the college level and help a track program," Etheridge. "When I contacted Coach White, he was eager to sign her, based on the numbers and the personal report I gave to him. Jessica is a good recruit. She has good work habits and she does well in the class room."

The Head Hunters lived up to their name Monday in adult men's softball by knocking off Kerby's 16-11.

Shortstop Nick Quinn's defensive play and outfielder Glen Hogland's hitting proved to be the difference as the Head Hunters improved to 3-7 for the year.

Kerby's slips to 8-2 but remains in second place behind league leading Gym 2000.

Gym 2000 pushed their season mark to 9-1 Monday by holding off Wal-Mart 13-11. The Gym victory and the Kerby's loss, puts Gym in sole possession of first place in the league standings.

Hogland had an inside-the-park home run for Head Hunters.

The Head Hunters led 5-4 after one inning before Kerby's tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third.

Boar's Head became the first team to reach the finals of the postseason T-Ball Tournament by taking a 21-17 win over Imboden in Monday's often-heated winner's semifinal game.

At times both coaching staffs erupted over the officiating, the official scorekeeping and with each other.

The kids, however, seemed to be content to play in the rain-softened dirt.

Nonetheless, Boar's Head knows they will play for the tournament title on Thursday. The team's opponent, who will come from the loser's bracket, has not yet been determined. The championship game has been tentatively set for 7 p.m.

If the team from the loser's bracket wins the 7 p.m. championship game, the tournament's "if" game will be played Friday.

It was the first loss of the tournament for Imboden who led 6-5 after one inning.

Boar's Head rallied to take a 14-12 lead in the third and then led 21-14 before Imboden came to bat in the last inning.
