Ms. Gussie M. Jones, age 41, of Forrest City died Sunday, March 7, 2004, in Baghdad, Iraq.
Ms. Jones was born Dec. 11, 1962, in Forrest City, the daughter of Van Jones and Lizzie Jones, who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Palestine High School in 1981, Arkansas University Central in 1986, joined the United States Army in 1988, where the last rank she earned was captain.
Ms. Jones was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program at Syracuse University and graduated in 1998. She graduated as a registered nurse and a second lieutenant. She also served on the staff of the 31st Combat Support Hospital as a critical care nurse in Baghdad, Iraq. During her over 15 years in the Army, she reveived several honors including the Bronze Star (posthumously), Joint Service Commendation, four Army Commendation Medals and four Army Achievement Medals. Also, she was a member of the Abundant Living Faith Center in El Paso, Texas.
Ms. Jones is survived by five sisters, Rosemary Maggett, Betty Jones, Berdia Jones, Anita Peterson and Wanda McDaniel; two brothers, David Jones and Van Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ms. Jones were held on Monday, March 15,
2004, at the St. Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock. Burial followed
in the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery in North Little Rock.
