10-Under girls' softball league play begins

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

The girls took the softball fields Tuesday night to open the 2002 10-under slow pitch softball league.

But not without a little disorder.

Walker Insurance and Southern Furniture played their opening game under protest, even though the official scorebook shows Walker to be the winner, 14-6. The book does not offer an explanation of the protest filed.

That may or may not hold up.

In other 10-under games, Forrest City Bank had a easy time against Children's Clinic, scoring in every inning to take a 13-5 win.

Sanyo scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back or slowed down, rolling past True value 14-3 in three innings.

Stevens Funeral Home took a 10-0 win over the league's new team, B&E Tires and Food Giant ran past Dr. Schwartz 10-1.

The 16-under girls' fast-pitch league will get under way Thursday night while the 12-under fast-pitch league will start on Monday, May 10.

Youth Baseball

Leslie Construction plated a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie for a 5-4 win.

Pearson Insurance ran all over taco Bell 16-7 while Sanyo had a easy time against Joey's Muffler, winning 17-1.

Pearson got three runs each from John Vowans, Scott Gracey, Timothy Graham and Antonio Sanders.

Taco Bell got two runs from Xavier Clardy, who was also the starting pitcher.

Sanyo got runs from every starting player in the lineup including two each by James Alldredge, Matt Jumper, Kendall Lee, Jacob Sohn and Malik Mosby

Corey Robichaud scored the lone run for Joey's Muffler..

*In the Minor league (pitching machine) Vaccaro Lumber shut out Food Giant 19-0 while Easley Law handed Twillies Tigers a 12-2 opening season loss.

Easley scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull away from the Tigers.

Play resumes in the Minor League on Thursday night.

Also Thursday, the Junior Babe Ruth league will open its 2004 season with a pair of games on Field 8.

The men's and women's adult softball leagues are tentatively scheduled to begin next week.
