Mustangs look for second conference win in Cabot

The Forrest City Mustangs will travel to Cabot looking for their second conference win of the season tonight.

Last Friday, the Mustangs survived an offensive shootout with the Searcy Lions taking a 34-31 victory at Sam Smith Stadium.

The Mustangs will face a Cabot team which took one on the chin last week, falling to West Memphis. Action is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Panther field in Cabot.

* In other action Friday, many eyes across the state will focus on Palestine as the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots host Barton in homecoming festivities.

The Palestine-Wheatley Patriots had their way against Elaine Friday night, rolling up another 576 yards of total offense in a 48-0 shut out win.

The Patriots lead the state in total offense and in points scored.

Friday's win over Elaine puts the Patriots at 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the 6AA Conference.

* The Hughes Blue Devils struggled in the first half but were able to mount just enough offense in the second half to put away a feisty Augusta team 14-8 Friday night.

Hughes led 6-0 in the first quarter but Augusta scored and converted the two-point play to lead 8-6 at the half.

The Blue Devils were able to score in the second half and get the two-point conversion to seal the win.

Clifton Smith and Johnny Payton scored for Hughes.

Hughes improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the 6AA Conference.

Hughes will host Elaine Friday night.

Young Mustang golfers headed to state tournament

A pair of young Forrest City High School golfers will move on to the state tournament after turning in the low scores for the Mustang team in conference competition this week.

Freshman Matt Howton and Sophomore Katie Ramsey are both headed to Fayetteville over the next two weeks after Howton fired an 81 and finished tied for 11th in the boys conference tournament and Ramsey finished sixth in the AAAAA East district tournament after scoring a 99 at Big Creek Country Club in Mountain Home.

Mustang Golf Coach Wally Rauth said that he expects Ramsey to continue to do well at next week's state tournament which will be held at the Fayetteville Country Club.

"Katie played extremely well on an extremely tough course and I'm just tickled to death that she qualified for the state tournament. I think that she will give them a pretty good run for their money and people need to watch out for her over the next couple of years," Rauth said

Hannah Martin, a senior from Jonesboro took home medalist honors after shooting an 89 and leading Jonesboro to the tournament crown with a team total 294. Rauth said Ramsey's score as a sophomore shows her potential.

"All of the top players in the conference this year were seniors and Hannah was right there with them. For a 10th grader to play that way is pretty exciting," he said.

Rauth also beamed when talking about the performance of freshman Matt Howton during the boys conference tournament.

"Matt did really well, finishing 11th out of 40 boys at the tournament. The three low scores from the non-qualifying teams moved on and Matt was our low scorer. He just really had a good tournament and I'm expecting him to just improve," Howton said.

Cabot took the conference championship after defeating Jonesboro in a 1-hole playoff. The host team, Mountain Home, finished third in the tournament. Jordan Payne of West Memphis was the medalist after firing a 69 and will join Howton and Mark Turpin, from Sylvan Hills, who finished tied with Howton at 81 in Fayetteville on Monday, Oct. 18.

Rauth said that he also got a great effort from Mustang golfers Nehamiah Stephens, Doug Drake, Steven Holmes and Zach Jones. Jones provided an extra highlight for the Mustangs during a practice round Wednesday when he recorded his first hole-in-one.

"I told the guys to just go out and get them some practice and get their yardage books done and they were out doing that. I was riding the course and they came up to me and told me that Zach had dropped one in," Rauth said.

Junior Mustangs have tough week with two losses

Forrest City Junior High Mustang football coach Rich Trail has seen better days after a pair of losses this week for the 8th grade Mustangs, Tuesday, and the 9th grade squad Thursday night.

The eighth graders took one on the nose in action Tuesday and fell to 2-3 on the year after giving up 24 points in the second half to West Memphis Wonder, losing 24-6.

The game went to the half knotted at zero before Wonder scored to open the second half. Forrest City struck back quickly after Joey Bonds found Gerald Williams for a 60-yard touchdown score.

"Joey threw just a pretty pass to Gerald and they made it happen for that touchdown. We just didn't play well in the second half. It happens to everyone," said Trail.

According to Trail, the ninth grade squad held tough last night and came up just short against undefeated Jonesboro Annie Camp 7-0.

"We played a really good game and came up just a little bit short last night. The team really played well and we got a good offensive performance from Dexter Adams and Leonard Banks came up big for us on defence," Trail said.

Both teams hit the road next week as the eighth grade team travels to Cross County, Tuesday for action and the ninth grade will face another Joneboro team when they visit Jonesboro McArthur.
