Cox leads Hurricane to win over Highland

Mustangs will play season-opening matches Thursday

Jonesboro's Stephen Cox shot a 72 to earn medalist honors Tuesday afternoon as the Hurricane golf team beat Highland 297-317 at Jonesboro Country Club.

Willie Little and Nathan French both shot 74s for the Hurricane while Joseph Boone shot a 77 and Klayton Seyler notched an 80 on the par-71 course.

Preston King led Highland with a 76 while Rick Hutchinson shot a 78. Nathan Fisher finished with a score of 80 while Brant Goings and Brandon Goings shot 83 and 88, respectively.

Jonesboro (2-0) travels to West Memphis Thursday.

The Forrst City Mustangs will open the prep golf season Thursday under new head coach Wally Rauth.

The Mustangs will host Nettleton at Forrest City Country Club, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Rauth will field nine boys and one girl this season.

Returning for the Mustangs are Doug Drake, Clint Cowan, Steven Holmes and Katie Ramsey. Joining the team this year are Matt Howton, Neamiah Stevens and Tyler McCluskey.

"We're going to try and build the Forrest City golf program over the next two years," Rauth said. "We need to get our overall numbers up a little and keep them up."

Tuesday, at Paragould, Greene County Tech's Noah Flannery shot a team-low 40 in a play-five, count-four format at Paragould Country Club, leading Greene County Tech past Nettleton and Paragould in high school golf.

GCT shot a team score of 175, while Nettleton (2-2) finished at 179 and Paragould finished at 184.

Paragould's Garrett Meier had the lowest score at 39. Nettleton's Jeremy Luther shot a 42 while Matt Hogan notched a 43.

In other high school golf matches played Tuesday, it was the Pocahontas girls defeating Corning at Rolling Hills Country Club, led by Blair Green's 49 for nine holes.

Emily James shot 54 for Pocahontas, which had a 166 team score. Corning finished at 173.

Piggott's boys team finished two strokes lower than Pocahontas at 124-126 to take the boys' win.

Chase Akins shot 39 for Piggott, while Jonathan Madison was the medalist with a 37.

Ricky Storms shot 43 for Corning, which finished with a team score of 133.

At Walnut Ridge, Andy Hutchinson shot a 37 in leading Crowley's Ridge Academy to a 122 team score and a victory over Walnut Ridge, Bay and Hoxie.

Barrett Kelley shot a 39 for Walnut Ridge, which totaled 124 for second place. Bay's Justin Hagger shot a 36 to lead all individuals, but Bay finished third at 141.

Hoxie finished with a 160, led by Billie Mike Watson's 44.

And finally, Valley View's Zack O'Riley shot a 42 and Peyton Agan and Taylor Woodruff both shot 48 Tuesday in leading Valley View over Buffalo Island Central.

Valley View (3-1) shot a team score of 138 compared to BIC's 144.

Anthony Sims shot a 47 for BIC while Zack Wilson and Cass Taylor shot 48 and 49, respectively.


Men's basketball tourney at Wynne

A memorial basketball tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at the O'Dell McCallum Community Center in Wynne.

The tournament, for men, ages 18 and older, is being sponsored by the Boys & Girls' Club of Cross County.

Entry fees are $40 per team .
