Scrimmage set 5/22

The Forrest City Mustangs will cap the three-week spring practice session on Thursday when they take the field for a controlled scrimmage beginning at 5:30 p.m. Field conditions permitting, the scrimmage will be held at Sam Smith Stadium and a $2 donation will be taken at the gate which will help with the purchase of new game jerseys. Fire at Complex 5/22

Tuesday’s storms caused a minor fire in a building at the Forrest City Sports Complex about 4:30 p.m. The Forrest City Fire Department reported a lightening strike caused the fire by overloading the building’s electrical box. Torch run 5/22

The 2013 Special Olympic Law Enforcement Torch Run started this morning at the St. Francis Area Developmental Center on South Washington. Among those running were Arkansas State Police troopers and Bureau of Prisons officers with the Federal Correctional Complex-Forrest City. The group was running to Wynne, where they then were joined by Wynne Police Department and Arkansas Game and Fish officials. The group then ran to Augusta. Successful run

The Lil’ Lady Mustangs pose for a group photo at Mustang Arena after completing the program’s fourth season. More than 40 young girls in third through sixth grades participated in what has become an annual event under the direction of Forrest City Lady Mustang basketball coach Bobby Harris, far left. The program is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball. The girls were divided into teams and coached by Lady Mustang players. A Lil’ Lady Mustang Skills and Drills Camp for third through sixth grade girls will be held May 28-30 at Mustang Arena. The cost is $10 per day or $15 for all three days.  Photo by Fred Conley.

Astin gets SEC honor

Forrest City’s Barrett Astin, a junior with the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team, pitches in a game played earlier this season. Astin will start for the Razorbacks on Wednesday when they open play at the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. On Monday, Astin was named to the SEC Baseball Community Service Team for volunteering his time with several programs located in the Fayetteville area. Astin has pitched in 16 Arkansas games this season, starting 12 of those and is 4-4. Submitted photo.

Kindergarten registration

Central Elementary School has been holding kindergarten registration and screenings for incoming students. Officials with the school stated on Monday that screenings would be held until 3 p.m. today, however the next round will begin at the school on the first school day of the 2013-14 school year.
